CGHS is Central Government Health Scheme in short form and it is comprehensive health care arrangement that the Central Government provides for its employees and pensioners, which facility covers their dependants too.
This facility was initiated in the year 1954 and it is available in specified cities, which include Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bhubaneswar, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chennai, Chandigarh, Delhi, Guwahati, Dehradun, Hyderabad, Jabalpur, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Kolkata, Meerut, Nagpur, Patna, Mumbai, Pune, Shillong, Ranchi, Jammu and Trivandrum.
The CGHS is very broad health care extended to the CGHS Beneficiaries in India. The medical facilities offered through this scheme are provided at the Wellness Centres (earlier referred to as CGHS Dispensaries) /Allopathic polyclinics, Ayurveda centres, Yoga, Sidha, Unani, and Homeopathic systems of medical care.
Under CGHS, quite a number of these dispensaries are functioning, which include
- 254 allopathic centres or dispensaries
- 19 in the form of polyclinics.
- 78 as Ayush dispensary/ units
- 3 as Yoga Centres
- 65 as Laboratories
- 17 of Dental Units
